Welcome to Edgerton, Wisconsin!
Edgerton, Wisconsin is a city straddling Dane and Rock Counties in the south-central part of the state. The population was 4,933 at the 2000 census. Originally called Fulton Station, Edgerton was named after a 19th Century railroad engineer, Benjamin Hyde Edgerton. When Edgerton was approached about using his name for the city, he recommended caution. "You better wait until after I'm dead," he told leading citizens. "I might do something to discredit the name."
Edgerton's old-fashioned brick storefronts are more than scenic backdrops for its wealth of historic sites. Here, as well as in other unique locations throughout the city and surrounding countryside, lie many riches. Residents love to spend weekends and summer evenings browsing quaint shops, hunting for antiques or beholding works of local artisans known for pottery, print making, stained glass, ceramics, crafts and more.
Edgerton's downtown is a treasure trove of history. Its museums, points of interest and historic buildings take you to another era when the town was "The Tobacco Capital of the World." Known locally as "Tobacco City U.S.A.," because of the importance of tobacco growing in the region, Edgerton continues to be a center for the declining tobacco industry in the area. At one time, there were as many as 40 tobacco warehouses dotting the streets of Edgerton. Queen Anne style mansions along Edgerton's Washington Street testify to the wealth and prominence some merchants once had. The 1890s Carlton Hotel, once located on Henry Street, also once served as an additional reminder of the tobacco industry's influence. Although it was built by a brewing firm, the hotel (which burned to the ground in the 1990s) was frequented by tobacco buyers and sellers.
History converges with literature in Edgerton, thanks to the Sterling North Society's dedication to preserve and promote this author's works and local heritage. The W. Rollin St. home where an 11-year old North lived in 1918 with his pet raccoon - the inspiration for his well-loved novel Rascal - is the crown jewel on a site walk of places significant to North's life. The restored home, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, also accommodates a literary center and museum. The Edgerton Public Library, which houses a display of Sterling North books, and the Edgerton Methodist Church that is home of "Poe the Crow" round out the walking tour.
Edgerton's other major claim to fame is its association with Pauline Jacobus. Pauline and her husband, Oscar Jacobus, were responsible for the first artistic pottery created in Chicago in the mid-1880s. By 1888, the couple had moved their business to Edgerton. Although Oscar's death and an economic depression disrupted the business in the 1890s, Pauline Jacobus continued making pottery in Edgerton until the early 1900s fire that destroyed her rural Edgerton home, "The Bogart." Much admired and sought-after as an American art form, "Pauline Pottery" is recognized in antique and art galleries throughout the world. A log cabin from the old Bogart site and the factory warehouse where Pauline Pottery was first made in Edgerton still survive.

The Conservation Club is also located in the park which hosts trap shooting leagues, tractor pulls, and can be leased for meetings and receptions.

The park is an openly landscaped area with many mature trees, a gorgeous bridge that crosses Saunder's Creek, a beautiful swimming complex that offers both a splash pool for the children and a full size lap pool, plus a slide in the pool.
