Evansville was first settled in the 1830s by New Englanders who were attracted to the area by its pristine wooded landscape and the placid Allen Creek. By 1855, the city recorded its first plat and was complete with homes, shops, and churches. In 1863, the Chicago and North Western Railway came to Evansville, accelerating growth. At this point, Evansville's economy comprised the surrounding agriculture, mainly wheat and tobacco. By the turn of the century Evansville had over 1900 residents, and by the 1920s, most of the buildings in Evansville's future Historic District were completed.

Evansville is a Wisconsin pioneer in the preservation of historic buildings. The Evansville Historic District, which surrounds Main Street and stretches to the side streets of Garfield Avenue and Liberty Street, includes dozens of historic homes and other structures. The Wisconsin Historical Society called Evansville home to "the finest collection of 1840s to 1915 architecture of any small town in Wisconsin". The Evansville Seminary was located near College Drive in the district. Its building was designed by architect August Kutzbock. In 1976, in the early days of historic preservation in the United States, the leaders of the community commissioned a comprehensive survey of the historic buildings in town. Over 172 residential, commercial, public and manufacturing buildings were identified as having architectural or historic significance for the community. This survey led to the creation of the existing Evansville Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Today, Evansville has a reputation as an attractive "New England-like" small town that honors its past by preserving and protecting its historic buildings. The fastest growing community in Rock County (The city's population grew 27.3% from January 1, 1990, to January 1, 2001. From that date to January 1, 2005, the city's population has grown another 21%), Evansville has certainly maintained its charm and small town friendly atmosphere. Surrounded by farmland and countryside, you can feel the peacefulness as you drive its tree-lined streets. Settled in the 1840s, the town was originally referred to as "The Grove" because of the abundance of maple trees that covered the land. This natural setting is still very evident throughout the city as you'll notice tall trees encompassing the historic homes. Accordingly, Evansville was honored to be named a Tree City by the Arbor Day Foundation in 2002; the designation continues annually.

Evansville has a large central park, Leonard Park, on the shore of Lake Leota. Amenities include a baseball diamond with night lighting, a softball diamond, two tennis courts, a basketball court, a swimming pool, picnic shelters, and playgrounds. A skateboard facility was installed in 2006. The city contains four schools: Levi Leonard Elementary, Theodore Robinson Intermediate School, J.C. McKenna Middle School, and Evansville High School. Major employers in Evansville include Stoughton Trailers, which builds semi-trailer chassis, Varco-Pruden, which manufactures prefab metal buildings, Baker Manufacturing, a pump and well maker, and Evansville Manor, a nursing home.

With a convenient location between Madison and Janesville, and relatively close proximity to Chicago and Milwaukee, Evansville has proven to be a great location for businesses since its settlement in 1839. Evansville has a rail line and is within 15 miles of Interstate 90. Baker Manufacturing, which opened its doors here in 1873, a manufacturing facility for Stoughton Trailer, and steel building construction manufacturer Varco-Pruden are three of the largest employers in Evansville. Small businesses flourish as well, as seen by the long list of local businesses in Evansville.
